CANÇIONETA from classical guitarist Frederick Lawton explores the music of mid-20th century Spain. It showcases rarely heard works by Mompou, de Falla, Asencio, and more. Spanning from 1920 to 1971, these compositions include elements of French impressionism, Catalonian folk traditions, and centuries-old Iberian influences. CANÇIONETA was recorded using vintage microphones, lending a warm and saturated tonal color to the performances. Mostly consisting of song and dance forms, the works featured on this album are rich in contrasts yet unified by their uniquely-Spanish forms and harmonies. Despite often being overlooked in favor of more romantic works, the selections presented in CANÇIONETA are diverse, dynamic, and deeply resonant.
